KZN Inland U16 win bronze

THE KwaZulu-Natal Inland U16 girls’ hockey team have won the bronze medal at the SA U16 Interprovincial Tournament in Bloemfontein.

Inland won their first three games, drew to tournament winners Southern Gauteng and lost one game in their pool. The team did well enough on the first three days to qualify for the semi-finals, where they faced KZN Coastal.

Inland scored first off a penalty corner by Andrea Davis (St John’s).

In the second half, Inland continued to put pressure on KZN Coastal, but failed to convert.

In the last 15 minutes of play, Georgia Hannan (St Mary’s, Kloof) of KZN Coastal scored a very good reverse-stick goal from the top of the strike zone to equal the scores.

“The match went into extra-time and despite Inland having given everything, it was KZN Coastal who managed to score the golden goal off a penalty corner to take them through to the final,” said Inland coach Lyndal Robertson of the Wykeham Collegiate.

“The Inland team were disappointed with their loss, as they had played extremely well throughout the week and were tournament favourites for the finals,” added Robertson.

Inland came out strong the next day to play Amathole (Border) in the bronze medal match and Natalie Esteves (St John’s) converted off a penalty corner in the first half.

Amathole were awarded a PC in the last 10 minutes of play in the second half and converted. The teams then played a penalty shootout.

Inland’s Buhle Zondi (GHS) was on top form in goal and kept three players from scoring. Hannah Moxham (St Anne’s), Nicola Deenik (TWC) and Esteves all converted to ensure victory.

“This Inland U16 team trained hard and were well prepared for the tournament,” said Robertson.

“We aimed for top four and achieved it. The team were extremely unlucky not to get into the final, as they were one of most structured and best attacking teams at the tournament.

“Our strikers did us proud, converting 17 goals. The defence was solid; their best game was against Southern Gauteng with Southerns only entering [the goal zone] three times during the entire match.”

Inland players Danielle Cairns of Treverton, Nompilo Thenjwayo of GHS, Natalie Esteves of St John’s and Prudence Qwesha of Kokstad were selected for the tournament team.
