KZN Inland dominate Friday the 13th

2012-01-14 00:00

FRIDAY the 13th was a good day for KZN Inland at Kingsmead, with KZN Coastal yesterday trailing by 35 runs with seven second-innings wickets to come in this Provincial Three-Day Challenge encounter.

Resuming on their overnight 64 for one with SJ Erwee on 24, Inland dominated Friday’s play. The St Charles product compiled a career-best 89 and was unfortunate not to chalk up his maiden first-class ton in six matches after batting for four hours and facing 193 deliveries that included 12 boundaries.

Devon Conway hit three fours and three sixes in his 46 and captain Kyle Nipper, who took a career-best six for 56 off 26 in Coastal’s first innings, batted two hours for his half-century which included seven fours and a six as Inland put together partnerships of 69 for the second, 96 for the third and 58 for the sixth wicket in reaching 325.

Coastal’s right-arm seamer Chad Fortune, turning 20 on February 10, returned his first five-wicket haul in first-class cricket in just his third match at this level.

Coastal are on an uncomfortable 57 for three in their second knock after Kimeshan Chetty and Athi Maposa got in amongst them and one fancies that much depends on Gareth Roderick, Matt Hulett and Cameron Delport, if needed, in today’s first session.

Tomorrow sees the T20 bash starting at 11 am at the same venue.
