KZN Inland end day one on 271/5

2012-11-30 00:00

THE KwaZulu-Natal Inland cricket team were in a strong position at the end of day one in the CSA Provincial Three-Day Competition match against KZN Coastal at the Maritzburg Oval yesterday.

Winning the toss and electing to bat, Inland were rocked back on their heels when Tyler Lortan was trapped in front by Dane Patterson with the third ball of the match. The arrival of SJ Erwee at the crease to join Nic Hendrie restored Inland’s faith that they had made the right decision as the pair added 74 for the second wicket.

The in-form Hendrie eventually fell to left-arm spinner Keshav Maharaj, Coastal’s most successful bowler, for 40 (98 balls, six fours), but subsequent partnerships of 29, 63 and 102 steered the home team to what could develop into a significant first innings total.

The Inland top order are clearly benefiting from the coaching expertise of former England one-day batsman Mal Loye and Erwee (44 off 119 balls, five fours), consistent wicketkeeper/batsman Abram Ndhlovu (38 off 67 balls, five fours) buckled down to the task at hand in making valuable contributions.

Anchoring the innings, Brad Moses (65 not out off 172 balls, nine fours) has been at the crease for four hours and his role today will be critical to Inland taking a good first day even further — provided he is given full support by the lower order.

In the context of the match, Coastal made what could be a vital breakthrough when free-scoring Inland captain Kyle Nipper (69 off 87 balls, seven fours, two sixes) was dismissed by opening bowler Brandon Scullard three overs before bad light stopped play.

Today’s first session could tilt the balance back in the Durban-based team’s favour, but not if Moses and company have anything to do with it.
