KZN Inland face tough final day against WP

2012-10-13 00:00

KZN Inland were 124 runs behind Western Province with nine wickets in hand at the end of the second day of the CSA Provincial Competition three-day match at the Wally Wilson Oval in Cape Town yesterday.

The Maritzburg lads face a grim battle on the third and final day today to avoid another heavy defeat, this after they were beaten by 10 wickets at the hands of Eastern Province’s impressive combination in Port Elizabeth in round one last weekend.

WP replied to the 239 scored in Inland’s first innings on Thursday with a total of 373 for six declared before putting the visitors in to bat towards the end of the day, and Inland lost opener Chad Barron for eight before stumps were drawn with the total on 10 for one.

Resuming their first innings on 63 for one yesterday, Western Province’s batters were able to build big partnerships, with the highlight being that of 130 for the third wicket between captain Mathew Kleinveldt and the prolific Moegamat Adams.

Kleinveldt was the top scorer of the innings with his patient 83 coming off 194 deliveries, having occupied the crease for four-and-a-half hours. His innings included eight fours and two sixes.

Adams was the most belligerent batsman of the innings, his 78 off 80 balls in just under two hours containing five fours and five sixes. Former KZN Coastal and occasional Dolphins wicketkeeper/batsman Bradley Barnes, coming in at number seven, weighed in with an unbeaten 62.

Slow left-arm chinaman bowler Tabraiz Shamsi was the pick of the Inland attack, snaring three wickets for 135 in a marathon 39 overs.

On day one, Inland won the toss and decided to bat, but in contrast to the host province, the PMB boys were unable to string together partnerships of note.

The 50-over match takes place on Sunday.
