KZN Inland go down by 12 runs

2012-03-19 00:00

IT was so near yet so far for KZN Inland as they went down by 12 runs to Northerns in the Provincial One-Day Challenge match at the LC de Villiers Oval in Pretoria yesterday.

Having been asked to bat, Northerns compiled 232 all out with the last wicket falling in the final over. In reply, Inland ran out of batsmen as they were dismissed for 220 with four overs to spare.

Lerato Kgoatle made a brisk 44 on debut, fellow Northerns opener Francois le Clus scoring just six runs in a first-wicket partnership of 57. First-wicket Pieter Malan weighed in with an innings top score of 56, putting on 69 for the third wicket with Douglas Hewitt (22). That’s where the better partnerships ended as no one other than Shershan Naidoo (23) and CJ de Villiers (23) made it into the 20s.

Inland opening bowler Brady Barends (three for 61 in 10 overs) and spinner Tabraiz Shamsi (three for 30 in 10) got the lion’s share of the wickets, while seamer Rudi Hillermann chipped in with two for 37 off 10 with Calvin Savage (two for 24 off 9.2 overs) the most miserly, both of the latter’s victims caught behind by wicketkeeper Devon Conway.

Chasing 233 to win, Inland lost stand-in captain Divan van Wyk and Conway very cheaply to Northerns frontman De Villiers, the two openers and potential match-winners were back in the hut inside the first five overs. The consistent SJ Erwee (64 off 81 balls, six fours and two sixes) and the in-form Glen Addicott (70 off 82 balls, five fours and three sixes) added 116 for the third wicket at a run a ball and at the halfway mark Inland were well-placed to win this match.

However, Inland failed to kick on and after bowling Erwee, Shaun von Berg (four for 30) proceeded to mop up the tail.

Meanwhile, only 27 overs were possible in the Provincial Three-Day Challenge match. Inland were left wondering what might have been after the Northerns first innings had been teetering on 74 for five, but rain proved to be the ultimate winner.
