KZN Inland have it all to do

2008-10-24 00:00

KZN Inland were 99 runs ahead of Free State on first innings with one wicket intact after day two of the three-day SA Airways Provincial Challenge match yesterday. Inland were 268/9 at bad light in reply to Free State’s 169 Thursday.

The pitch is relatively slow, so it won’t be easy for FS to set a gettable target today. That leaves Inland’s first innings bowling heroes Andre van Vuuren (6-31) and brother Morne (two key wickets) to lead the task of getting 10 FS wickets.

The first two hours will be crucial.

As player/coach Doug Watson said, Inland lost wickets in clusters, which affected their momentum. Three went down on 49 and four for 13 runs 46 overs later.

Four sensible stands — 49 for the first wicket, 82 for the fourth, 56 (ninth) and an unbroken 37 for the 10th — made this innings, the last two taking the game away from FS.

The key innings was that of number nine Ollie Humphries (60, 131 mins, 100b, 9x4), who featured in both late partnerships with Sashen Dorasamy and number 11 Jomu Mbili, while Sylvester Motsomai’s medium-paced swing stood out.

Inland have 116 overs’ first-innings batting as FS were dismissed 31 short of their 85 allocation.

FS coach Rudi Steyn was disappointed with the areas some of his bowlers put the ball at times and it reflected in the total.

A rare treat was Wiaan van Zyl’s left-arm chinaman (leg-spin) style, the uniqueness of delivery troubling Inland’s batters while the occasional wrong ’un (googly) added to the mystery.
