KZN Inland miss out on semi-finals

2010-06-24 00:00

THE teams that have played the most structured hockey have made the semi-finals of the SA U18 Boy’s Interprovincial Tournament.

However, the news for KZN Inland supporters was not good as the defending champions could only draw with Southern Free State in the morning at the AB Jackson Greenfields Turf, which meant they had the impossible task of beating Border by nine clear goals at Maritzburg College’s Pape’s Astro in the afternoon.

In today’s semis on Pape’s Astro, the Pool A winners Border meet Southern Gauteng at 12.50 pm, before Western Province face KZN Coastals in the second semi at 2 pm, this for a berth in tomorrow’s 1.15 pm title match at the same venue.

All four title contenders have game breakers who can turn a match on its head, and while Border and WP are favoured by most, both will have to bring their A game to Pape’s Astro if they are to remain on course for a collision in the final.

From what could be established at the time of going to press, the SA U18 Girls’ IPT in Potchefstroom appears to have semi-final candidates in Northerns, Southerns, Boland and EP. Inland are in the fifth-to-eighth play-offs, as are Coastal. Inland meet Southern Free State today.

Inland coach Lyndal Robertson said her side’s problem all week has been the difficulty in turning ample possession into goals, but yesterday was better as they beat Border 2-1 and East Gauteng 4-2.

“Boland are the best team here, so far,” she said. “They have been training since November and you can see it. Their off-the-ball movement is superb.”

After yesterday’s break, the SA Rugby Academy Week concludes in Vryheid today with interesting match-ups likely to be KZN versus Free State at 2 pm, Lions up against Blue Bulls at 3.15 pm and WP versus Boland at 4.30 pm.
