KZN Inland outplay EP in Port Elizabeth

2015-01-12 00:00

THE New Year got off to the perfect start for KZN Inland at St George’s Park in Port Elizabeth this weekend when captain Shane Burger and coach Grant Morgan’s tight unit earned back-to-back wins against the strong Eastern Province line-up.

On Saturday, Inland wrapped up the Sunfoil Three-Day Cup match by an emphatic 95 runs. Yesterday in the 50-over clash the reigning Cricket South Africa Provincial Challenge 50-over and T20 champions edged Eastern Province by one wicket with six balls to spare. The unlikely figure of number-11 Athi Maposa finished in style, smashing a six over long-on off Lionel Vaaltyn that left the EP fielders dumbfounded at the sheer audacity of the shot.

Spinners Kyle Nipper and Abdul Razak took five wickets between them in EP’s 216 in yesterday’s 50-over match, while in-form all-rounder Nipper top scored with 54 before the bold Maposa delivered the killer blow.

In the three-day win, a first innings 90 by Nipper and a 79 by Nic Hendrie in the second dig were the mainstays of the Inland batting effort. Tall leg-spinner Razak was the destroyer-in-chief with the ball, his five for 47 in EP’s second innings for match figures of seven for 65, and was the X-factor in his side’s success on the final day.

The big haul of points that Inland earned on successive days this weekend does their chances of adding more medals to the trophy cabinet at the Maritzburg Oval the power of good.
