KZN Inland staring down a barrel against Northerns on day one of three-day match

2010-03-26 00:00

THE lads from Pretoria, Northerns, were in the pound seats after day one against KZN Inland at the Maritzburg Oval yesterday.

In both teams’ final Provincial Challenge three-day match, Northerns go into day two just 33 runs behind Inland in the first innings, with nine wickets in the kitty.

After winning the toss and electing to bat, Inland were shot out for just 154, with opening bowler Sean Nowak scything through the home side’s batsmen in taking five for 32 in 15 productive overs.

In reply, fourth-placed Northerns raced along to 121 for one at over four to the over, losing the prolific Rassie van der Dussen (51) to a Mbasa Gqadushe/Tim Drummond run-out in the second-last over. Francois le Clus (71 not out) and Graeme van Buuren resume this morning, and last-placed Inland are once again staring down a barrel.

Nowak had great support from fellow seamer Tumi Masekela, who grabbed two for 15 in 11, while off-spinner Eden Links was equally miserly in bagging a brace for only 29 runs in nigh on 21 overs. It was a fantastic example of how unrestrained pressure from both ends chokes batsmen, and together the trio dismissed the Inland top six. There was little joy for Inland, number four Glen Addicott top-scoring with 49. Only opener Ollie Humphries, skipper Drummond and lower-order batsman Narvaar Harridave got into the twenties, while partnerships were few.

Humphries and Addicott added 44 for the third wicket, and the latter plus Drummond put on 51 for the fourth, but after doing well to reach 108 for three in a measured manner that offset Inland’s disastrous loss of their first wicket on the third ball of the match, the wheels well and truly came off.

The 40-over match between champions Northerns and third-last Inland takes place on Sunday.
