THE KZN Invitation athletics team that went to Grey College and competed against all the best athletic schools in the country came back well pleased with their efforts.

Three athletes achieved top three performances based on the Absa points table. In the Boys’ U17, Roland Pienaar from Howick threw the discus 55,17 m, achieving 928 points. In the Girls’ U17, Bianca Conradie (CKS Club) earned 953 points for her discus throw of 43,38 m. The third athlete achieving more than 900 points was Brendon Skimmer from Glenwood, whose javelin throw in the Boys’ U14 of 58,12 gave him 934 points.

There were further 10 first places, 10 second places and nine third places amongst the 29 teams that were taking part. The only top athletics school that was missing was Menlopark, but early next year the KZN team will be competing at Menlopark.

First places went to U17 boys Oko Qwesha (Suid Natal) in long jump, Arthur Mathee (Glenwood) in the shot put, Khutso Thobejane (Glenwood) in the 400 m and Nhlakanipho Zulu (DHS) in the 800 m. Girls’ U16 first places went to Chanelle Stone (CKS) in high jump and Michaela Johnson (GHS) in the 800m.

The only U16 boy was Eugh Nyakabau (Treverton) in the long and triple jumps. At U14 level, it was two girls who won their events — Bophelo Seoe (Treverton) in the 200 m and Marike Roos (Ferrum) in the 400 m.
