KZN Junior Cricket wrap

2012-12-15 00:00

THE KwaZulu-Natal U13 cricketers played their last matches in the Boland on Thursday, while the U17s had their second match in neighbouring Cape Town, and it was generally a good day for local teams.

Both the U17 KZN teams faced tough opposition, with both drawing their matches. Coastals, facing Northerns, batted slowly, initially losing wickets at regular intervals. They were at about 2,4 to the over after electing to bat.

When Tevin Varatharajula (Glenwood) came to the wicket he pushed the rate up to 2,9 when he smashed 39 in 39 balls and enabled his side to declare on 193 for seven after 65 overs, the compulsory declaration stage. Ryan Wallace (Kearsney) also made 39 but in a much more cautious knock.

They probably would have won the game on the first innings if they had batted a little quicker initially, as they had Northerns on 171 for nine at the close of play. Jordan Gregory, of Kearsney, bowled 23 overs of spin, taking four wickets for 66.

Free State declared on 227 for eight, with Christian Steyn (Grey College) compiling a century. Andrew Darroch (St Charles), Nic Elliott and Luke Stevens (both Michaelhouse) were the pick of the bowlers, each taking two wickets.

Inland started poorly, losing the three top-order batsmen for 30, but a rebuilding partnership between Marc van Wymeersch (Hilton) and Shaun Wormington (Maritzburg College) added 87 for the fourth wicket and at the close they were 139 for five.

The U13s finished off their week on a winning note. Tom Price (Clifton NR) and Ashiq Ramdin (Egerton) claimed the last seven wickets in 13 overs as Griquas collapsed from 97 or three to 121 all out. They were chasing the moderate 151 target posted by Inland. Bradley Sherwood (St Charles Prep) was top scorer with 43.

Coastals had a good 39 run win against Free State in which Durban Prep boys Sean Gilson and Bradley Hope top scored with 70 and 84 respectively in their total of 234 for 9. Free State was all out in the 42nd over for 195 with J Brown capturing a fifer.
