KZN: Most proudly South African province

2012-09-24 00:00

KWAZULU-NATAL is the most proudly South African province, with 92% of citizens happy to call themselves South African.

Overall, 80% are proud of their country, although this is a drop from 95% in 2007.

The survey was carried out by research company Ipsos among 3 565 people older than 15 in April and May.

Director Mari Harris said the decline was attributable to concerns about the economy, service delivery and political uncertainty.

The survey also found that civic pride increased with age.

Although usually the young were more optimistic about governance issues, in this case 78% of 15- to 34-year-olds were proud to be South African.

The figure rises to 81% in the 34- to 49-year group and to 83% among over-50s.

Indians are the proudest South Africans.
