KZN clubs fired up for the next round

2011-04-29 00:00

AFTER the Easter break, the next round of KZN club rugby competition gets under way tomorrow and the players should be recharged and revitalised.

For KZN First Division South leaders Maritzburg Collegians, it will be yet another weekend of inactivity after Durban club Wentworth withdrew from their scheduled 2 pm encounter with them at Woodburn.

Midlands Rugby Sub Union (MRSU) president Piet Herbst told The Witness yesterday that Wentworth are unable to field two competitive sides for the first and second team fixtures against Collegians. The situation has left PMB Collegians chairman Tony Day extremely annoyed.

“We can’t go three weeks without a game and then expect to be match fit and in the right mental and physical shape to meet Hillcrest — the other unbeaten side in First Division South — at Hillcrest next weekend,” Day said.

Day said that in the absence of the Wentworth fixture, Collegians are contemplating giving the firsts and seconds a run against each other tomorrow in a bid to give the players some sort of match practice.

“It looks like the only option we have got, but the situation is very unsatisfactory,” Day said.

Wentworth — who were in dire straits last year when Collegians slaughtered them 99-0 and the match was mercifully called off with 20 minutes to go — now seem on the brink of folding for good. The move this season to win the development club with KZN Premier Division club Harlequins, has not worked — and like Young Lions in Pietermaritzburg — there seems to be no escaping Wentworth’s demise.

If Wentworth do somehow survive, they should most certainly not be playing at KZN First Division level, as their woes are impacting on the ambitions of a high-flying club in Collegians.

Tomorrow, First Division South side PMB Elephants face Richards Bay at 3.30 pm at Woodburn Stadium, while Fidelity Security Moor Cup Premier Division team Maritzburg Varsity meet Harlequins on the Bluff in Durban.

Varsity will be looking to build on their promising display against KZN and SA club champions College Rovers last time out, but Quins are confident after their win against Varsity College Old Boys.
