A KWAZULU-NATAL couple were arrested after police found Mandrax worth R10 million on their properties in Tongaat and Newlands West, Durban, yesterday.

After finding 85 Mandrax tablets in the Newlands house, police investigators and the crime intelligence unit recovered 200 000 Mandrax tablets, along with 20 tons of base powder and 250 litres of chemicals used in drug manufacturing in a small factory on a farm in Tongaat.

Police spokeswoman Director Phindile Radebe said the police have been following leads for the past four months and early yesterday morning they pounced on the couple at their house in Newlands West.

Police also recovered ammunition at the place.

Radebe said the suspects led the police to the factory on their farm, a newly built three-roomed house at the back of the main house of the farm.

Forensic experts examined the the packages containing the drugs for evidence.

Radebe said, “We are firmly focused on neutralising drug syndicates through intelligence and ‘disruption’ operations.

“This bust will no doubt seriously impact on the availability of drugs on the street market …”

Both suspects were charged with manufacturing, dealing and possession of drugs as well as possession of ammunition, and they will appear in the Tongaat Magistrate’s Court soon.
