KZN cricket sides behind in three-dayers

2013-03-23 00:00

BOTH of the KZN teams in CSA Provincial Three-Day Competition day two action yesterday were on the receiving end.

In Johannesburg, KZN Coastal go into today 233 runs behind with seven second-innings wickets intact and it will take a huge effort or bad weather to hold off Gauteng.

Gauteng scored 416 for eight declared in reply to KZN Coastal’s first-innings 142, while in their second dig Coastal are on an uncomfortable 41 for three.

Opening bat Dominic Hendricks, who made an unbeaten 176 in just under eight hours (291 balls, 24 boundaries) continued his purple patch when he ran out the in-form Michael Alexander for nought before taking a blinding catch to dismiss the dangerous Jonathan Vandiar (5). To compound matters, Nashen Govender was caught lbw on the crease without offering a shot to Pumelela Matshikwe.

In Kimberley, KZN Inland lead Griquas by 42 runs with six second-innings wickets in hand. Inland, who totalled 232 first up, are on 98 for four in reply to Griquas’ first-innings 288. With Griquas 96 for five and the quality Aubrey Swanepoel (51) back in the hut, Inland were looking good but Griffon Nieuwoudt (98 off 126 balls, 11 fours and two sixes) had other ideas. Sinethemba Mjekula and Brady Barends took three wickets apiece with Ruhan Pretorius getting two.

Much will depend on SJ Erwee (37*), Mathew Hulett (4*) and the lower order today.

The T20 matches take place tomorrow.
