KZN decides not to announce top 10 matrics

2012-01-06 00:00

KWAZULU-NATAL is the only province not announcing their top achiever and top 10 matriculants of the class of 2011.

This came as a surprise to department staff, members of the matriculant’s families and the media that gathered at Durban’s ICC yesterday at the event where the department usually announces the best of the best in the province.

Head of the department Dr Nkosinathi Sishi said they have changed the top 10 into a top12 — one from each district to encourage pupils in all districts.

“This was the department’s way of encouraging learners to shine in their districts, rather than making the top 10,” he said.

Maritzburg College pupil Muhammad Ismail, with nine distinctions, was named as the second top perfoming student countrywide and is the top student in the city.

Speaking to The Witness last night, he said he will be studying for a BComm Accounting at the University of KwaZulu-Natal’s Pietermaritzburg campus with a bursary from PriceWaterhouseCoopers.

He expressed his excitement at having been invited to Johannesburg when Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga announced the outcomes of the national matric exams on Wednesday night.
