KZN four in SA U21 squad

2013-05-17 00:00

IT was a notable feather in the cap of St Anne’s, Carter High and Voortrekker when the South Africa U21 squad of 20 was announced this week.

Taryn Mallett and Sherry King, now studying in the Cape, both learnt their hockey at St Anne’s, while Phume Mbande, now at Tuks in Pretoria, was a star for Carter High in her schooldays.

Voortrekker director of sport Charmaine Koekemoer is the manager of the SA U21 team.

The SA U21 squad of 20 players will take part in the final selection phase in Amsterdam from July 6 ahead of the Junior World Cup finals from July 27 to August 4 in Monchengladbach, Germany.

Once the final selection has been made, an 18-player South Africa U21 team will compete in the 2013 Women’s Junior World Cup.

But that’s not all for Mbande. The goalkeeper who played for the SA senior team at the Investec Challenge in Cape Town earlier this year is in the South African women’s hockey training squad that jetted off to China on Wednesday for a three-week senior national camp at Liaoning Navigation Sport School.

Meanwhile, the KZN Inland Men’s Premier League match between the UKZN Pietermaritzburg and PMB Collegians first teams was an entertaining, ding-dong battle for supremacy that ultimately went the way of the students, but not without a fight from the older more experienced Collegians players.

There are five Inland men’s and women’s premier league matches this weekend.
