KZN girl wins ‘Ticket to Life’

2013-07-18 00:00

UNLIKE most matric pupils who are undecided about what to study next year, Micaela Newton is all set thanks to the “Ticket to Life” bursary worth R200 000 she has won.

After a gruelling week-long contest with four other finalists, the 17-year-old from KZN outshone her competitors in the 2013 International Hotel School Boot Camp. Her bursary covers the three years it will take to graduate at the International Hotel School.

The finalists were thrust into undertaking the tasks set in the competition at the Peninsula All-Suite Hotel in Cape Town, which hosted the event.

“Each day we had to work in a different department of the hotel and we were given tasks that were marked by the heads of departments. We worked in the front office, the kitchen, food and beverage, and housekeeping,” Micaela told The Witness.

Tasks ranged from answering phones and cutting up vegetables to making beds and cleaning toilets. The finalists got to experience every aspect of what it takes to run a hotel from the bottom up.

“ My favourite task was the food and beverage one, where we learnt how to set a table properly and what meals go with which wines. The attention to detail is incredible. The toughest day by far was when I did housekeeping. I have a new- found respect for it. It’s so tiring and there is an art to making a bed,” said Micaela .

Chris Godenir, general manager of the Peninsula, who presented Micaela with her prize, said: “This year’s finalists were very eager and showed a lot of teamwork and passion with all of the tasks and challenges that they faced.”

Newton has always wanted to own her own bed & breakfast. Thanks to this bursary, she is one step closer to achieving her dream.
