KZN inland trumps Easterns twice in memorable weekend

2012-02-28 00:00

IN one of the most memorable weekends in the short history of KZN Inland provincial cricket, back-to-back victories were achieved in both the three-day and one-day versions of the game.

The Provincial Three-Day Challenge match that ended at the Maritzburg Oval on Saturday saw Inland beat Easterns by 19 runs on a day of barely suppressed intensity and emotion that erupted when the last wicket fell.

Inland went even harder at the Benoni-based Easterns on Sunday and clinched the Provincial Challenge 50-over match by a massive 162 runs.

With the weather having been so hot, Inland head coach Anton Roux and the squad knew it was going to be a dry wicket likely to turn markedly as the three-day match wore on.

Batting first, Inland would have liked a bigger first innings total, while their second knock against an extremely disciplined Easterns attack gave them the vital edge, thanks largely to a gutsy 55 by debutant Suhail Razack coming in at number seven.

“Suhail’s innings was played under immense pressure, the ball kicking out of the rough into his body,” said Roux.

It gave Inland just enough runs to play with, enabling Tabraiz Shamsi to spin Inland to victory by a slender margin thanks to his remarkable figures of seven for 39. His career-best is eight for 164.

“In the 50-over match the guys batted like machines with Glen Addicott — not taking risks, batting through — summing it up.”

The coach said that once Easterns had fallen behind in their reply, the pressure mounted and the Inland bowlers and fielders cleaned up.
