KZN leads councils in creating new jobs

2010-10-15 00:00

MINISTER of Public Works Geoff Doidge has called on municipalities to be at the forefront of creating jobs to halve unemployment by 2014.

He was speaking at the opening of the first expanded public works programme (EPWP) summit, being held at Durban’s International Convention Centre this week

The summit was attended by representatives of all 285 municipalities around the country.

Doidge said local authorities are strategically positioned “at the coalface of service delivery”.

He said lessons learnt from the first phase of the EPWP had convinced the government of the need to continue with the programme on a larger scale.

“Consequently the minister of finance announced a substantially increased budget of more than R4 billion for the implementation of the second phase of the EPWP,” he said.

Doidge said key adjustments to the design include the allocation of more funds for municipalities and provinces that provided more jobs to communities while delivering much needed services.

The minister also announced that between April 1 and June 20, the EPWP created 193 001 work opportunities.

This figure reflects an impressive 30% achievement against the set annual target of 642 000 net work opportunities in the 2010/11 financial year, Doidge said.

The infrastructure sector has created the most work opportunities, Doidge said, with KwaZulu-Natal ahead of all other provinces in this regard. The Eastern Cape and Gauteng followed KZN.
