KZN legislature: R700 000 scam uncovered

2011-03-11 00:00

A PROJECT that saw members of the KZN Legislature getting their own laptops with 3G connectivity has resulted in a rip- off estimated to be more than R700 000.

A KZN Treasury investigation has found that the laptops were supplied at an inflated rate. It turns out that the legislature paid about R18 700 each for 70 laptops and a further R45 000 each for 10 MacBooks. Former standing committee of public accounts (Scopa) chairperson Jo Ann Downs said the laptops supplied to the parliamentarians were not worth more than R8 000. They had outdated technology and programmes, she added.

After ongoing complaints from parliamentarians about laptops constantly breaking down, the finance committee made a resolution to have their procument investigated.

The investigation was completed and the report presented to the legislature. Downs said the exercise resulted in irregular expenditure of R770 160 and for both sets of laptops fruitless expenditure of R99 136 and R320 677 respectively. A staff member has been implicated in the investigation and is expected to be charged.

Legislature spokesperson Wonder Hlongwa confirmed that the report on the investigation was forwarded to the finance portfolio committee and that the legislature is following the processes it recommends.
