KZN man on trial for multiple sex murders

2008-02-12 00:00

A Ladysmith man is alleged to have shot dead four people in four months and committed sex crimes that went together with the murders.

These facts emerged yesterday in the Ladysmith High Court when Vusumuzi Innocent Khumalo was charged with 16 crimes. He pleaded not guilty to all the counts.

The crimes were committed between late 2006 and early 2007 at Ladysmith.

It is alleged that he shot dead a man and his infant daughter and then made the child’s mother perform three indecent acts and raped her. She has not testified yet.

About two weeks later he allegedly pointed a gun at Lindiwe Dube and a 76-year-old woman who were cutting grass. Dube shouted at him, at which he shot her dead.

He is also charged with then kidnapping the old woman, making her walk a good distance and then making her perform an indecent act.

He then tried to rape her, but failed and let her walk away.

Yesterday, a woman testified that Khumalo shot a woman who refused to walk with him. The witness said Khumalo made her and a third woman walk with him — he is charged with their kidnap — and then indecently assaulted them. She will continue testifying today.

A woman told the court that Khumalo broke into her home, assaulted her and robbed her. She pointed him out at an identity parade and at his trial yesterday.
