KZN meet Free State in main game

2010-07-01 00:00

THE wise men have honoured KZN U18 with the 3.30 pm main game at Craven Week in Welkom today, and it’s set to be a king-size battle against the perennially classy Free State combination.

“We are chuffed with the recognition and the boys are looking forward to it, having played very well against North West Leopards on Monday,” KZN head coach Tony Richter told The Witness last night.

KZN concentration will have to be complete, as lapses in the 33-12 win against NW cost them.

Free State will be deadlier in feeding off errors.

KZN have injury niggles. Captain and No. 8 Guy Alexander (knee), Andrew Holland (intense shoulder pain) and left wing Emil Schwarz all require physio.

Richter is confident they will start.

Alexander and diminutive fullback Mbembe Payi impressed against NW, while centres Andrew Holland and Patrick Howard particularly were devastating in slashing through the defensive line. Pacy Emil Schwarz always threatened. Flyhalf Duncan Campbell’s calmness, accurate boot and ability to set his centres free was a feature.

KZN’s pack were solid against a NW eight 10 kg heavier per man, but flanker Jason Klaasen, in-form fetcher Meyrick Walker, lock Francois Jansen van Vuuren, hooker Senzo Mtshali and company must be on top of their game from the outset.

Richter said lock Bob Chonco comes in for Wade Elliott.

Free State’s exciting running saw them grab four tries in beating Border 35-13 on day one. Flyhalf Johan Goosen played a pivotal role. His one-on-one with Campbell will be fascinating. Free State captain William Small-Smith and partner Paul Jordan, top-class centres, can destroy midfields, and the 10, 12, 13 battle between three quality players either side will be another highlight.

Western Province have now outplayed both Eastern Province, who shocked the men in blue on Monday, and the Lions, and look certainties to play in Saturday’s prized final.

A win today could see KZN as their opponents.
