KZN petrol stations run dry in rush, motorists left stranded

2012-09-05 00:00

A NUMBER of petrol stations around Pietermaritzburg ran dry yesterday before the fuel price went up by a record 93 cents a litre at midnight.

Motorist Mpume Mgwebu told The Witness that she drove to a number of stations only to be told that there was no unleaded petrol.

“We were told that a truck was only coming at 10, and by the time they have completed filling up the pumps it will already be midnight,” said Mgwebu.

She said they had been driving around town for 45 minutes early yesterday evening without any luck.

“They refuse to tell us when there will be petrol, and they keep telling us to speak to the manager. We don’t know what we will do at the moment,” she said.

The Witness went to a number of stations last night. At one station, pumps had been deserted and cars drove in only to realise that the pumps were empty.

At another of the stations, Mfundo Mabaso said he had been driving around for about 30 minutes and was told that there was no petrol.

“I’m going to check one more place and then I’m going to go home,” he said.

Cindy Double said she usually battled to find a station with petrol whenever there was a hike.

Fin24 attributed the increase to rising oil prices, a weaker rand and an increased retail margin to finance wage increases for pump attendants and cashiers.
