KZN placed sixth at Sub Youth Interprovincial

THE second annual Yellow Pages Summer Series takes place in the Eastern and Western Cape in a few weeks, commencing with the Port Elizabeth leg on December 8. It will move to Oudtshoorn on December 12 and Stellenbosch on the 15th, with the final leg in Parow on December 17.

The mile will be the focal middle distance event and a street mile will be included in Oudtshoorn on December 13.

The KZN sub youth team of about 150 athletes returned with four gold, 14 silver and 18 bronze medals to finish in sixth place at the Sub Youth Interprovincial in Germiston last weekend.

Central Gauteng and Gauteng North fought for the top places, with the former taking 84 medals (34 gold) and the latter taking 73 medals (27 gold).

Vaal Triangle, Central North West and North West North finished ahead of KZN with five gold medals. Sheer numbers put KZN into third position with 493 points, but even this was less than 55% of the gathered by Central Gauteng.

The leading KZN performances were Thomas Gibson’s win in the boys U11 1 200 m, while Michael Greer was second in the U13 long jump and Cassidy Williamson added two silver medals in the U13 100 m and 200 m.

Philip Tshezi won the annual 42 km Sani Staggermarathon. Eric Ngubane and Comrades gold medallist Bongamusa Mthembu were the main challengers.

Boxer’s Iris Ndlovu won the women’s race, with Ingrid Krussel of the Vryheid club just under six minutes adrift. Although the race is debatably the toughest Comrades and Old Mutual Two Oceans qualifier, a number of runners dipped under the required five hour barrier, including Krugersdorp’s Erica Nieuwodt, who won the 50-59 age category.

The helter-skelter downhill run from the border to the Sani Pass hotel was won by Luizizwane Zwane.

Yellowwood Park host the BMG Yellowwood 15 km on Sunday. BMG have sponsored the race for the last 17 years. This is the 38th edition of the popular race for the Stainbank Cup, which starts from the club fields at 6 am and takes runners on a tour of the suburb and the scenic Stainbank Conservancy. For more information call Fred at 083 384 4053.

On Sunday Umhlathuze host the Spares Shop Heatonville 19 km run and walk commencing from Addison Park in Empangeni at 6 am. It follows the main road for part of the run before turning in the country road for the climb to Heatonville Farmers Club. For details call Lionell Qwabe at 084 429 0305.

Trail runners have the Umgeni River Trail COP17 10 km run and walk from Umhlanga Cabanas on Sunday at 8 am. Details from the Riverside Sports Trail runners.

Comrades Marathon entries jumped from 16 300 late on Sunday night to 17 090 by early Monday morning and then shot up to the 18 000 limit by mid-morning yesterday. It meant that entries closed one day ahead of the November 30 deadline. It is expected that allowing for non-qualifiers and withdrawals around 15 000 runners will line up on race day on June 3. The 87th Comrades marathon is a down run from Pietermaritzburg to Durban.
