KZN provincial cricket sides away this weekend

2013-01-31 00:00

THE KwaZulu-Natal sides in the CSA Provincial Challenge competitions, Inland and Coastal, travel to Windhoek and Pretoria respectively for four days of cricket against Namibia and Northerns.

The three-day matches begin today, with the T20 matches taking place on Sunday.

For Inland and Namibia it is something of a battle-of-the-basement situation, with the Pietermaritzburg-based lads lying 11th on the 14-team log table and Namibia in 13th position as the three-day competition heads past the halfway mark.

With six matches left, including the Windhoek outing, Inland have got time to make up ground and will be looking to top-order batsmen Nic Hendrie and Brad Moses to lay the foundation against the Namibians.

Hendrie stands in sixth place in the competition’s batting averages with 412 runs at 51,50 that include four half-centuries, while Moses is in ninth position with 379 runs at 47,37 including one ton and two fifties.

However, Inland’s low position on the log can be traced to not having one bowler in the top 20 of the competition averages.

The T20 competition is still in its infancy and here, too, Inland have the chance to finish well.

KZN Coastal lie one behind Inland on the three-day log and face a Northerns team at LC de Villiers Oval that stands in ninth place, so at face value another reasonably even contest can be expected.

The Durban lads’ problems can also be traced back to a lack of stand-out performers, as only Keshav Maharaj — with 315 runs at 45 that include a ton and two fifties — has been consistent with the bat, while Brandon Scullard is the lone bowler from the two KZN cricket teams to feature in the top 20, having taken 17 wickets at 17,58.

For KZN there is lots work to do, both for the individuals and for the teams.
