KZN schools have two weeks to enter relay competition

2010-02-05 00:00

KZN schools have until February 19 to submit their entries to compete in the inter-school relay competition. The competition will be the focus of the pre-progamme for the second leg of the Yellow Pages track-and-field series, which will be held on February 26 at King’s Park Stadium in Durban.

The event is open to teams of eight from each school. Entry details are available from the KZNA office at 031 312 9374. The main programme will provide local athletic supporters with the opportunity to watch the country’s top athletes in action as they build towards the SA track-and-field championships, which are also scheduled for March in Durban.

There is much speculation as to whether world 800 m champion Caster Semenya will be cleared by the IAAF to compete in the local series, which starts in Port Elizabeth on February 19.

• The 2000 Comrades Marathon entries that were snapped up in less than four-and-a-half minutes last Saturday bring the total number of accepted entries to over 23 000 for the 2010 race.

The Comrades Marathon Association had originally planned for a 20 000 cap on the race and now will be looking to see how many of the field fail to make the required sub-five-hour qualifying standard or are forced to withdraw through injury or illness prior to the event.

In normal situations, marathons experience a 10% drop-off between entry and start line, but with so many oldtime comrades runners having entered in the first draft last year, this number is expected to be higher with the 20 000 cap being achieved on race day.

The CMA is aware of the many disappointed runners who have missed out on the opportunity to run the 2010 Comrades Marathon. However, runners are advised to be on the alert for announcements soon about the opening date for entries for the 2011 Comrades Marathon.

• Next weekend’s Nimas Hillcrest marathon is one of the first qualifiers for Comrades, with the Postnet Weekend Witness Pietermaritzburg Marathon on February 28 the most popular qualifier for the 89-km classic.

The two-lap event is the marathon of choice for Comrades runners and this year doubles as a Two Oceans qualifier and the provincial championships.

“We have had amazing interest in the race already and we feel sure that we are going to reach our limit of entries before the final entry date,” said organizer John Hall of the Natal Carbineer’s Club.

The event, which also offers a single half-marathon, offers permanent numbers to runners who have completed the marathon five times.

Entry collection boxes are available at Poobie Naidoo Sports, Westville Pavilion TotalSports, Durban Runner, Sports Zone and KZN Athletics offices.

• With Nedbank’s sponsorship withdrawal resulting in the cancellation of the Durban City Marathon, the Emondlo half-marathon (hosted by the Umqulusi club) is the only road race in the province this weekend.

The event, which commences at 6.30 am from Emondlo Sports Ground, also offers a 10 km run or walk for those looking for something a bit shorter. Joseph Mdletshe has more information on the race at 083 319 7821.
