KZN sides struggle at SA Schools championships

2012-11-06 00:00

THE winners of the @lantic School Sevens in the various regions around the country were in Pretoria on Friday and Saturday for the SA Schools championships. The timing was not good as the Grade 12 boys wrote their two maths papers on Friday and yesterday, so they were missing from all the schools that had to travel, but the local schools involved some of them.

Maritzburg College had won the Durban section and Sarel Cilliers won the Northern KZN area, and they were two representatives from KZN, but neither had a good tournament.

The tournament was hosted by Garsfontein Hoër, who beat the winners of 2010 and 2011, Tygerberg, in the final.

College had a young team with some Grade 10s in the side. Perhaps they were overawed by the size of their opponents and the occasion, and they did not play well. Coach Steve Botha said they tried hard and improved as the tournament progressed.

Their worst game was against Sarel Cilliers in the semi-final of the Bowl (sides that had been last in each pool), where they lost after having won comfortably against them, to win the Durban finals.

Sarel Cilliers were in a tough pool with Affies, who won the pool, Tygerberg and Monument. Pool B had College, pool winners HTS Middelburg, Oakdale of SWD and Hentie Cilliers of Virginia in the Free State. Pool C was won by Garsfontein, the eventual champions, and Pool D by JAG Excelsior of Cape Town.
