KZN teen beauty finalist hopes to help poor

HELPING others who are less fortunate than her. That’s what Leandra Holder (16) dreams of.

And being a finalist in the 2014 Miss Teen Commonwealth South Africa has given her a shot in the arm to do just that.

Leandra, a Grade 11 pupil at Maritzburg Girls’ High School, entered the pageant a month ago after seeing information about it on the Internet.

“I had entered pageants at school before because I love modelling, but most importantly I love to make a difference in my community.

“The reason I entered the pageant is because it involves a lot of charity and community work.

“The proceeds will go towards the Nelson Mandela Children’s Hospital Trust and I am proud to be a finalist among 24 models who have been shortlisted,” she said.

Leandra said she would focus on fundraising efforts now that she had finished her mid-year exams.

Part of her efforts would include setting up a website. Other ideas are expected to flow from a workshop that the organisers are to hold in a few weeks.

Leandra said winning would mean being able to help those in need on a larger scale because the winner travels to London to participate in the international pageant.

“I play a balancing act of prioritising between school and helping my community, and when I am away from all of that, I play my guitar because that is my hobby,” she said.

Leandra takes maths, history, arts and biology, and would love to do psychology when she matriculates.

Readers can help her get into the finals of the South African leg of the competition by SMSing “LEANDRA HOLDER” to 42899 (R3 per SMS). A portion of the proceeds goes to the hospital trust.
