KZN theatre man to take farms to the city

2008-01-05 00:00

COLIN Penn, best known as the leader of the Pennants and for putting on nostalgic theatre shows, is setting out on a new venture. He is organising Farmer Brown’s Fresh Produce Market, to be held at Durban High School on Sunday mornings from 6 am to noon, starting on Sunday, March 2.

“In a nutshell, we want to bring the farm to the city,” says Penn. “Fresh produce, vegetables, fruit, pâtés, jams, condiments, butter, cheeses, breads, biscuits, honey — anything that can be eaten. Nothing store-bought. Only from Farmer Brown.”

When Penn and his wife were in the United Kingdom last year, they spent some time visiting farmers’ markets in Cornwall.

“Everyone had little tasters for their products, and we enjoyed knocking the sand off the fresh vegetables,” says Penn.

There were recipes available for customers to know what to do with the produce they had just bought and the Penns became hooked on the farmers’ market concept, coming back with lots of ideas to introduce to Durban.

Now he is encouraging farmers and other producers to contact him and get the market up and running by March, bringing the farm and all its produce to the city dwellers at the coast.
