KZN to host Indian diaspora event

2010-07-27 00:00

THE secretary in the Overseas Indian Affairs Ministry, Dr A. Didar Singh, was in KwaZulu-Natal at the weekend to plan a gathering of members of the Indian diaspora living in Africa.

The event, known as a pravasi, is scheduled to take place in Durban in the first week of October. This is the first time such an event will take place in South Africa and on the African continent

Singh, whose ministry was set up to work with the diaspora commmunity, said India is the 11th country in the world to set up such a ministry.

He said there is an annual gathering of the diaspora in Delhi, but many people are unable to attend; hence the concept of regional gatherings.

India’s overseas community, estimated at over 25 million, is spread over 190 countries.

This is Singh’s seventh visit to South Africa, and his first to KwaZulu-Natal.

He met the Premier, Dr Zweli Mkhize, yesterday morning and made a Mahatma Gandhi pilgrimage in the afternoon, visiting Pietermaritzburg Station and the Gandhi statue before flying back to India last night.
