KZN widow wins R7,9 mln Lotto Jackpot

2008-06-20 00:00

A Kwazulu-Natal widow is R 7 967 908 richer after winning the Lotto Jackpot last Saturday.

The woman, a mother of two, said she only spent R70 on the Lotto Quickpick ticket and began trembling when she called the national lottery call centre and was told the numbers on her Lotto ticket matched those on the winning almost-R8 million Jackpot ticket.

She said she was alone at home with her granddaughter when she learnt of the win.

“I just could not believe that I had won such a huge sum of money. I hid the ticket under the carpet. Although I was happy, I was also scared,” the woman told a winner’s adviser from national lottery operator Gidani.

Thembi Tulwana, public affairs executive at Gidani, says it is normal to experience uncertainty and fear after a sudden big win, which is why Gidani provide emotional counselling and set up financial advice sessions with independent advisers for major winners.

“For many winners the sudden windfall and realisation that they now have millions of rands in the bank can be a daunting experience. The winner services department was set up to look specifically after the needs of our winners when the game was launched …” said Tulwana.

The woman plans to renovate her house, buy a new car, donate some money to her church and invest the balance for her sons.
