2008-04-26 00:00

A strong contingent of KZN’s ultra distance triathletes returned home from the Spec-Savers Ironman South Africa recently with superb results.

Gold medal honours were achieved by Yvette Roberts (10h54.01) in the women’s 30 to 34 age group, Christopher Mortimer (9h48.45) in the men 45 to 49 and Neil Ridley (10h11.07) in the men 50 to 54.

Helen Buley was the first KZN women home and 11th overall in a time of 10 hours, 21 minutes and 39 seconds, to place second in her age group (women 25 to 29). Jane Brewer took a deserving second place in the women’s 35 to 39 category. Nicholas Kingsley placed third in the highly competitive men’s 35 to 39 age group in a time of nine hours, 21 minutes and 34 seconds. Racing in the Pro category, Wilma Daniel placed 10th (10h24.22) in the women and Brad Storm was seventh (8h46.13) in the men.

The race was won by Great Britain’s Stephen Bayliss in a time of eight hours, 18 minutes and 23 seconds while his fiancée Bella Comerford (also of Great Britain) stormed through the field on the run to win the women’s race in a time of nine hours, 27 minutes and 48 seconds.
