KZN’s first coloured bookmaker celebrates

2008-06-02 00:00

The first coloured bookmaker in KwaZulu-Natal celebrated his first anniversary in the horse racing gambling business in Raisethorpe on Friday evening.

Albert Noel (47) said his dream of becoming a successful bookmaker has finally arrived. He received his bookmaker’s licence in January last year.

Bookmaking had been limited to white and Indian people. About three months ago, Pius Mbuyisa, who is a former Msunduzi Municipality councillor, became the only black person in the business in KZN.

“Everywhere you go in the province you would only find white and Indian bookmakers. It took almost a year to get a licence as the Horse Racing and Bookmakers Control Committee started by screening me to establish my fitness to run the business,” said Noel.

For the past 25 years, he has been the passionate owner of four race horses.

Noel said the racing business has always been in his heart, and breaking down the barriers created by apartheid in the racing industry has always been his struggle.

Noel stopped gambling a few years ago, because he could not do it and run the business, although there is no rule that says so.
