2013-06-11 00:00

WHO or which event is going to be the KwaZulu-Natal newsmaker of the year?

Public voting for the 2013 award, which was launched at the Durban University of Technology, identifies KZN-linked individuals or events that most grabbed the headlines and shaped the news between June 2012 and May 2013. People can choose their favourite newsmaker from the following nominess by sending an SMS to 34382 (SMS costs R2):

• Chad le Clos –– 2012 Olympic gold medalist (SMS 1)

• The KZN response to storms havoc (SMS 2)

• The world-class economic summit (Brics); and soccer tournament (Afcon) hosted by Durban and KZN (SMS3)

• The KZN road to Mangaung –– ANC president Jacob Zuma’s re-election (SMS 4)

DUT Journalism Advisory Board chairperson and newsmaker of the year convenor Mary Papayya said the short-listed candidates were chosen by an independent judging panel. “The candidates received the lion’s share of the news coverage across all KZN media — print, radio and television. Stories range from hard news, to feature stories and in-depth reports,” said Papayya.

Hashim Amla won in 2011 and last year AmaZulu took the honours. Proceeds from this event will go towards a bursary for studies in journalism at DUT. The winner will be crowned at an invitation-only gala dinner in October 2013.
