KZN’s top pupil had ‘no secret formula’

DURBAN matriculant Gareth Mogambery says he cannot believe he is KwaZulu-Natal’s top pupil of the class of 2014.

The New West Secondary School pupil, who scored eight distinctions, is set to pursue a career in medicine at the University of KwaZulu-Natal.

“I have no idea how I did it. It still feels surreal to me; it feels like I was dreaming and woke up and forgot what the dream was about,” the teen said.

He downplayed his success, insisting there was no secret formula to excelling.

“There was nothing extreme that I did. I had no extra lessons and I didn’t really push myself hard, but maybe it is because I didn’t really have a life outside my school work,” he said.

The youngest of four children, Mogambery said he is looking forward to joining his sisters in the field of medicine.

“Both my older sisters are doctors and I always felt left out in conversations, so now I am going to know exactly what they are talking about,” he said.

Giving advice to the class of 2015, he said: “Matric is only one year, so you might as well buckle down and work hard. Do your best and your life will be sorted.”
