Kader Asmal honoured: Speakers recall principle, intellect, humour

2011-07-01 00:00

Deputy President Kgalema Motlanthe, widow Louise Asmal, son Adam, and grandchildren Oisin and Zoë, attended the official memorial service for former minister Professor Kader Asmal, who died last week. The service was held in the Cape Town City Hall yesterday. Speakers included activists from South Africa and Ireland, sports administrators, former legal and academic colleagues, Motlanthe on behalf of the government and even satirist Pieter-Dirk Uys. They recalled Asmal as a man of fierce principle, sharp intellect and great humour and charm in his many roles in Ireland while in exile and in South Africa. Here he helped to craft the Constitution and was minister of Water Affairs and of Education, as well as a formidable lecturer in law.
