Kadodia hits back at Middendorp

MARITZBURG United chairperson Farook Kadodia has taken off the gloves and weighed in with a punch following the sudden resignation of Ernst Middendorp from the club.

Following heavy speculation, the German mentor was yesterday confirmed as the new head coach for Bloemfontein Celtic, replacing Clinton Larsen, who also tendered his resignation earlier this week.

During his first stint with the club, Middendorp was given the boot after an outburst on television, and Kadodia yesterday told Weekend Witness that the coach was trying to force his way out in a similar fashion.

“He tried to push me to terminate his contract, but I was more patient this time,” Kadodia said yesterday.

In a live post-match interview on Supersport after the club had beaten Mpumalanga Black Aces, Middendorp said: “… As a coach, if you are hearing bullsh*t from the crowd, you have to pack your things and go home. Perhaps I am doing it. I think about it.”

Kadodia said: “I’m really disappointed because a professional head coach is not meant to behave that way.”

He added that the coach had been under pressure after the 2-0 loss to Kaizer Chiefs, and he put more on himself following that rant on Supersport.

“There was pressure after the Chiefs game that he needed to improve results. But, we had a good relationship with him and we trusted him. We wanted to play winning football and to attract fans to the stadium, and he didn’t take well to that,” he said.

The chairperson also took a shot at Siwelele, saying that he was disappointed in how they went about poaching the German from under United’s noses.

“They didn’t even contact us to say that they were speaking to him,” he said. “They wanted him so much that we eventually came to an agreement that they had to compensate us.

“We wish him all the best.”

When contacted by Weekend Witness yesterday, Middendorp would not comment on the statement made by Kadodia.

“I don’t think he is fair to say something like that. He can’t provoke me to react. He knows what happened,” he said.

“If he carries on making statements like this, then okay. It is fine.

“If he is talking like this, it is not fair. Making statements like this is out of order,” Middendorp said, adding that he would not comment on the matter any further.

Speculation on Thursday was that former Celtic boss Larsen was the favourite to be named as the new Team of Choice coach.

But Kadodia poured cold water on it, saying that whenever there was a vacancy at a PSL side, the media tended to link coaches who were out of work to the jobs.

“To get a new coach will take a while. We have to draw a short list, and we have to have interviews,” he said, mentioning that if Larsen was interested in the position, he would be interviewed.

“For now, Fadlu Davids will be the acting head coach. He will remain the acting coach until we have found a replacement,” Kadodia said.
