Kani’s classic a favourite for African film fest

JOHN Kani’s drama, Nothing But The Truth, has been entered into the Festival de Cine Africano de Tarifa (FCAT – Tarifa African Film Festival, Spain), which celebrates its seventh edition this year.

The film is a gripping investigation of the complex dynamic between black South Africans who remained in the country and risked their lives to lead the struggle against apartheid and those who returned victoriously after living in exile.

Multiple award-winning actor Kani is the lead actor in this film version of the internationally acclaimed, award-winning play Nothing But The Truth, which he authored.

The film will be competing in the African Dream (feature-length fiction films) section of the festival, which runs from May 21 to 29 in the Spanish town of Tarifa, and could win the Wind Griot award for the best feature film.

The award is worth €15 000 and includes a trophy.

Nothing But The Truth is one of eight films from South Africa that are entered for the festival.

The others are Lloyd Ross’s The Silver Fez; Jenna Bass’s The Tunnel; If You Only Knew by Lev David and Clare Cassidy; Die Hel by Mark Jackson; Abyss Boys by Jan-Hendrik Beetge; Sopo by Jacquie Trowell; and Come Back Africa by Lionel Rogosin.

Last year’s festival proved to be very successful for South African productions, with Madoda Ncayiyana’s Izulu Lami winning the best actress award for Sobahle Mkhabase and the audience award for the best film.

There was also success for Michael Raeburn’s film Triomf, which garnered a best actor award for Lionel Newton, and for Francois Verster, whose documentary Sea Point Days received a special jury award.
