Kearsney, College send clear message

2011-03-26 00:00

THE KZN School’s hockey fixtures got under way last weekend and continue today with just three major fixtures. There are a number of games also taking place midweek as schools prepare for the Easter Festivals.

At this early stage Maritzburg College and Kearsney have sent a message to their competitors.

Arguably the most keenly contested will be at Kearsney where they host Hilton. Both sides played last Saturday, but it is Kearsney who appear to be one of the teams to beat in the province this year. They have just opened their new water-based, national- standard pitch, where the Durban Schools Night League is presently being played.

Kearsney, about to embark on a tour to Singapore and Malaysia, will be keen to make a good showing. After three games they have already scored 12 goals although Northwood drew two-all with them. Hilton beat Northwood by a single goal but then lost against Clifton, a side which Kearsney had beaten 5-2.

Maritzburg College host Durban High School on Papes. Last year DHS were a side to reckon with, but they obviously are weaker or start slowly, as their one match was a 5-0 loss against Kearsney. College beat Clifton 4-0 but with the major share of possession should have won by a bigger margin. College again look to be the other side to beat this year.

Westville will host Michaelhouse in the last match and here the visitors have won both matches played. Westville on the other hand have played one match which ended in a dull 0-0 draw against St Charles.

Fixtures: Kearsney vs Hilton; Maritzburg College vs DHS; Westville vs Michaelhouse
