Kearsney choir to compete in China

KEARSNEY College choir will be defending its title when it compete in the 2010 World Choir Games in Shaoxing, China between July 14 and July 19.

Considered to be the Olympics for choirs, it is the largest choir competition in the world, with more than 400 choirs competing. Only two other South African choirs will be taking part — the Stellenbosch University choir and the Tygerberg children’s choir.

Kearsney aims to maintain its title­ as top folklore choir in the world. They are currently ranked first out of 3 500 choirs in the folklore category and 19th overall. The choir has also been invited to perform at the gala performance­ of the World Choir Games.

The choir tour was organised by the Friendship Ambassadors’ Foundation, which invited the choir to perform at the United Nations­ headquarters in New York.

Kearsney will be singing in three categories — scenic folklore, music­ of the religions and musica contemporanea.

The choir previously competed in choir games in Bremen in 2004, Xiamen in 2006 and Graz in 2008.
