Kearsney in impressive comeback against rivals

2014-02-18 00:00

KEARSNEY College’s first basketball team pulled off a deserved 55-48 win against Michaelhouse at the weekend in what had become a competitive rivalry in recent years.

Michaelhouse started well, making their shots count despite Kearsney’s defenders in their faces and it looked as though a humiliating defeat was on the cards for Kearsney.

They rose to the challenge, however, grinding away, wearing down the opposition and not letting Michaelhouse get too far ahead.

Half time saw Michaelhouse 15 points to the good and in control but Kearsney dug deep and launched an impressive comeback, their defence closing down any promising attacks from Michaelhouse.

By the end of the third quarter, Kearsney had gained the ascendancy and had turned the game around, enjoying a 10-point advantage early in the final quarter. Despite Michaelhouse’s best efforts, Kearsney held on for a memorable win with a display of great character.

Kearsney’s U16 basketball team played at a tournament at St John’s in Johannesburg. They beat St Andrew’s (Grahamstown) 32-15 in the plate quarter-final then dispatched Enjabluweni from Swaziland 27-9 in the semi-final before losing to Michaelhouse 15-23 in the final.

• Westville Boys’ High met Clifton College at Clifton and pulled off a comfortable 51-33 win. This was Westville’s fifth game of the season and allowed them to blood some U16 players at first team level.

Playing outside in scorching heat, Westville failed to convert early chances, allowing Clifton to apply the pressure. With the first quarter ending 11-8, it was game on.

A more relaxed approach by Westville in the second quarter saw Michael Smithers, making his debut for the first team, keep Westville ahead, giving them some breathing space as the game progressed.

As Clifton seemed to tire, Westville took control. Patience going forward and solid defence played in Westville’s favour and, mixed with their stamina, they wrapped up proceedings with ease in the final quarter.
