Kearsney outshine Hilton

2014-09-09 00:00

KEARSNEY and Westville Boys’ High School found their mark at the weekend with strong preformances against Hilton and St Charles on the soccer field, while Clifton College won the Durban derby against DHS.

St Charles 1 Westville Boys’ High 4

Playing in Pietermaritzburg, Westville showed no signs of any travelling blues, starting with good energy and purpose.

Pinpoint passing and the majority of possession saw Westville find the net as early as the fourth minute. Bongani Ndimande’s corner found Kyan Braithwaite who brought the ball down with his left foot and buried his shot into the bottom left corner.

It was the ideal start, yet despite knocking the ball around with confidence and creating several opportunities to extend their lead, the visitors changed ends still only a goal to the good.

The brief break saw Westville pumped up and Braithwaite was again in on the action, his through ball in the 32nd minute picked up by Sihle Mhlamvu whose left-foot effort found the bottom right corner.

With a two-goal cushion, Westville stood back a touch, playing lateral football, looking lethargic and ineffective.

They soon found out that total concentration is needed until the final whistle as St Charles capitalised on on a set-piece in the 44th minute, a cross whipped into the penalty area and headed home.

Boosted by their strike, St Charles tested Westville’s defence and it took some stern words from the sidelines to put Westville back on the rails.

Braithwaite, enjoying a storming match, drilled a low pass to Tony Mahlangu who took on and beat the last defender to smash the ball into the top right corner, restoring Westville’s two-goal advantage.

On the hour mark, Westville rounded off their day’s work when Braithwaite chipped a cross to the far post, where wing Shane Ball volleyed into the open net for the 4-1 win.

This was Ndimande’s final match for Westville and his talent has been rewarded with selection for the U19 AmaZulu side to play in the Multichoice Diski League against fellow U19 Premier League sides.

Kearsney 4 Hilton 1

Hilton travelled to Kearsney and met the maroon and white side on a day that saw the hosts win all their A team fixtures.

Both sides had their moments in an even first half, but it was Kearsney who drew first blood when Thomas Host struck home. His shot somehow weaved its way through several Hilton legs, finding the corner of the net and giving his side the advantage.

Hilton responded well and with intent, creating numerous chances to equalise before half time but the final blow could not be delivered.

They were also up against Donald de Kramer in the Kearsney goal who, when called upon, stopped numerous shots.

In a frustating end to the first half for Hilton, Kearsney attacked down the left and the cross into Hilton’s goalmouth saw Trystan Tanner’s superb diving header double the home side’s lead.

Despite trying to claw their way back in the second period, Hilton was closed down by an efficient Kearsney midfield and defence. In attempting to push forward and find the net, Hilton were left exposed and Kearsney were quick to pounce, two breakaway goals breaking the back of Hilton’s attempt in trying to salvage the situation.

With nothing to lose, Hilton’s efforts were finally rewarded with a late consolation goal in the dying minutes to finally get on the scoreboard.
