Kearsney show character

2014-10-09 00:00

KEARSNEY College hosted the second edition of the Independent Schools Stayers Basketball tournament, which finished on Tuesday.

The main goal of the event is to raise the level of the sport in independent schools, while also developing basketball programmes through exposure to competitive competition.

Twelve teams from around the country converged on Kearsney, with the sides divided into two pools.

Once the pool games had been dealt with, St Alban’s College and St John’s looked the teams to beat, winning their respective groups.

Hosts Kearsney had given a good account of themselves and were still in with a shout, drawn to face St Alban’s in the semi-final. St John’s and St Stithians squared off in the second semi. Kearsney pulled off a fighting 38-34 win and St Stithians had toppled St John’s 50-41 in another colourful match.

Kearsney took on St Stithians with tremendous character, pushing them all the way and just falling short as the Gauteng side celebrated a 50-40 win.
