Kearsney welcome schools for rugby fest

2015-04-02 00:00

KEARSNEY College are trimmed and polished as they prepare to host teams and welcome spectators for their Easter Rugby Festival starting today.

Last night, the festival was officially opened at the school with a panel discussion that included Sharks players Matt Stevens, Marcel Coetzee and Lionel Cronjé, whetting the appetite ahead of 12 schools playing over three full days of rugby.

Participating schools are Grey College (Bloemfontein), Menlo Park, Affies, EG Jansen, HTS Middelburg, Selborne, Dale, Framesby, Sacs and the KZN trio of Kearsney, Glenwood and Westville Boys’ High.

Kearsney, as the hosts, are first up today at 9.30 am, running out against Selborne, in what should be an exciting fixture as both teams play their rugby with ball in hand and are full of running.

Grey College, as the top-ranked school last year, always attract attention and their three matches against Middelburg (today), Kearsney (Saturday) and EG Jansen (Monday) should see Stott rugby field packed to the brim.

Glenwood and Westville should also glean solid support.

Besides the rugby, off the field there is the Boots and Balls initiative where players and spectators are invited to put new or good condition rugby kit, balls and clothing in designated bins at the main field.

Whatever is collected will be given to the KZNRU Development Programme at the closing ceremony on Monday afternoon.

Matches are played today, Saturday and Monday with three players awarded Sharks Academy bursaries courtesy of their potential being recognised by scouts watching all the games. Games start at 9.30 am, preceded by a primary school fixture at 8.30 am involving Umhlali Prep, Pelham Senior Primary, Highbury and a KZNRU U13 Ibutho development team.

Entry is R50 per vehicle and R20 for those on foot. This includes a 40-page brochure of all the teams and players.
