Kearsney win, Maritzburg College draw

2011-05-03 00:00

THERE were just the two hockey matches in KwaZulu-Natal on Saturday, a comprehensive win for Kearsney against Westville and favourites Maritzburg College being held to a draw by Hilton.

Westville vs Kearsney

A fairly even first half saw both sides with chances, but it was a goal just before the break that brought Kearsney alive. Their fitness after the tour to Malaysia was also superior to the hosts and in the second half it was all Kearsney.

The scoreline could have been even bigger than 6-0 if it had not been for some great saves by the Westville goal keeper, Darren Freeman.

Westville was starved of possession in the second half as Kearsney used the full breadth and length of their new surface to run Westville off their feet.

Ryan Hawke scored a brace, with the other goals going to Buzz Dhlomo, Craig Kirsten, Wesley Redinger and Nathan Pillbrough. This result has ensured that Kearsney is the side to beat in the coastal region.

Hilton vs Maritzburg College

Hilton had lost 2-3 against College just a few weeks back and they had worked hard to combat the free-running players from College.

College led 2-0 at half time after two well-taken penalty corners, the first by Grant Glutz and the second by Tim Guise-Brown.

In the second half College was disrupted by Hilton’s tackling and they could not play their normal game. They did not change their pattern and continued to try to beat their opposite numbers instead of letting the ball do the work.

Hilton was more slick in their passing.

Halfway through the half, Michael Holding scored a field goal to halve the College lead.

In the last few minutes College was guilty of not playing in the Hilton half and on the stroke of full time Hilton was awarded a penalty corner.

From the rebound off the keeper, hard-working Oliver Allan scored the equaliser, making it 2-2.
