Kharina Secondary crowned winners in Maths competition

2011-09-27 00:00

KHARINA Secondary School were crowned winners of the annual FET Learners Mathematical Talk competition held at Raisethorpe Secondary on Friday.

The competition, held by the Association for Mathematics Education of South Africa, challenges pupils to come up with presentations that interpret mathematics principles.

Kharina Secondary grade 10 pupils Denosha Mungal and Nadia Hoosen’s presentation, a Journey from Basic Transformation to Moebius Transformation, saw them take first place for the second time in a row.

“Our presentation was about the change of a figure. We used PowerPoint and a display showing how figures are rotated and translated. I am glad we won and did our school proud,” said Hoosen.

The pupils were given a hero’s salute by their peers yesterday after their victory was announced.

The school beat other local schools such as Heather Secondary, Raisethorpe, Woodlands Secondary, and Pietermaritzburg Girls High school. Mungal said being good at maths will be beneficial for her future career.

“I want to be a pilot, so I really need maths to make that dream come true, that is why I enjoy it. We worked hard preparing for the competition and we are happy we won,” she said.

Maths educator Premsarim Ramakrishnan added that the pupils will represent the uMgungundlovu district at the provincial leg of the competition in Durban later this year. “They had a good and apt presentation and communication skills. I am sure they will represent the district well at provincial level,” he said.
