Kidnap charge withdrawn

2014-07-04 00:00

THE Pietermaritzburg Magistrate’s Court withdrew charges of kidnapping and robbery against 42-year-old Bangladesh national Ibrahim Miah yesterday.

Miah was charged with kidnapping Bangladeshi businessman Jashid Hossen in Northdale on June 22. He was also charged with robbing Belayet Hossen at the shop in Old Greytown Road where the alleged kidnapping took place. The state had alleged that Belayet Hossen was threatened with a firearm and his hands were tied during the robbery. An amount of R20 000 in cash, four cellphones, R8 000 worth of cellphone airtime and R12 000 worth of cigarettes as well as a camera and computer were allegedly taken. However, these charges were also withdrawn.

State prosecutor Ningi Mhlongo told Magistrate Ntsoaki Ndawonde that the state would proceed with a charge of Miah being in the country illegally.

Miah, who has been in the country for more than four years, told the court that he was married to a South African citizen and his visa expired three years ago. He intends to plead guilty to the charge of being in the country illegally.

He will be back in court on July 8.

Earlier, a group of protesters with placards reading “no bail for kidnappers” gathered peacefully outside the court.
