‘Kidnapped’ woman found

2013-05-29 00:00

A WOMAN who was reported kidnapped along with a baby on Friday was questioned and released yesterday after police traced her to the KwaZulu-Natal south coast.

Spokesperson Colonel Jay Naicker said surveillance was set up outside various banks in Margate, Port Shepstone and Shelly Beach after a ransom of R100 000 was paid into an account by a church leader on Saturday.

At 9.50 am on Monday, a woman carrying a child who fitted the kidnapped victim’s description was seen entering a Margate bank.

“Police waited for her to exit the bank, hoping she would lead them to the kidnappers. In the bank she completed a withdrawal slip and withdrew R4 800,” said Naicker.

She left in a metered taxi, unaware the provincial tracking team and members of Point police were following. She went to a shopping centre and bought groceries.

From there she took the taxi towards Umtentweni and when police were satisfied she was alone, they stopped the vehicle.

“When questioned, the woman claimed that she managed to give her kidnapper the slip at the bank.” She was taken into custody for questioning and released.

Naicker said the 26-year-old and a four-month-old baby were reported to have been kidnapped from a Durban beachfront hotel. Someone called the church leader with ransom demands and, after it was paid, police spent the weekend searching for her.
