Kids to sing to Madiba

2011-07-16 00:00

NEARLY 12 million children in public schools will start the day on Monday by singing a special birthday song for Nelson Mandela simultaneously, all across the country.

The Nelson Mandela Foundation has partnered with the Department of Education, SABC, LeadSA, Independent Newspapers and Multichoice.

Basic Education Minister, Angie Motsekga in a statement said, “The country will honour Tata Madiba by singing ‘Happy Birthday Tata Madiba’ simultaneously at 08:05 on the morning of his birthday, July 18, 2011.”

The song, which will be led by a school choir that participated in the Eisteddfod National Choral Competition held last month, will be sung by school children in public schools on Mandela International Day.

Schools have been asked to hoist the national flag and sing Happy Birthday to Madiba on the day.

The Deputy Minister of Basic Education, Mohammed Enver Surty said, “School children will at 08.05 am start their activities by hoisting the national flag prior to singing the national anthem. Thereafter the children will have to construct a presentation in commemoration of the great Nelson Mandela.”

All South Africans are urged to participate in singing the inspiring song. — Supplied.
